L Contemporary (formerly Galería ATC) Unveils New Research-Focused Vision

Santa Cruz de Tenerife – November 4, 2025 – Galería ATC today announced that it will be relaunching as L Contemporary, a hybrid studio and gallery space. L Contemporary moves beyond the traditional white cube model, oscillating between studio practice, commercial gallery, and exhibition space. This approach positions the gallery within a broader movement among independent spaces that are testing new operational models.

"This evolution represents a need for an expanded vision," said Elle Przybyla, co-director of Galería ATC. "When we opened in 2017, we initially explored different ideas for the space before quickly coalescing around more established ways of presenting artwork. This direction enabled us to find our sea legs in a place with only a handful of privately run galleries. Under the auspices of L Contemporary, we will create a site for deeper engagement while building on the incredible foundation established over the past eight years."

The rebranding coincides with an organizational change. After eight years as co-director, Juan Matos Capote has stepped down to focus on his own artistic practice. Over the years, he has nurtured relationships with emerging and established artists, and his return to studio work marks a natural progression as the gallery enters its next chapter.

"Juan's contributions were instrumental in shaping the identity and reputation of GACT," continued Przybyla. "His decision to return to artistic practice reflects his unwavering commitment to art-making, an endeavor that L Contemporary will continue to champion."

The 2025-2026 season will be organized under the framework of "Basic Research,” in support of curiosity-driven pursuits in the humanities and science. Reflecting the gallery’s hybrid approach, L Contemporary will present exhibitions alongside research residencies, events, and collaborative projects. One such initiative, the Young Curator’s Program, will give early-career cultural producers opportunities to mount exhibitions at the gallery. Programming will also address issues related to artistic freedom and censorship, in response to the politicization of basic research and funding cuts in the United States to contested investigation areas such as climate change.

“As a U.S. citizen who has immigrated to Spain, my position is that we all share an ethical responsibility to address borderless concerns with intellectual integrity. L Contemporary will be unequivocal in its mission to support work that grapples with pressing issues.” states Przybyla.

Designed to accommodate both traditional exhibitions and experimental projects, L Contemporary will serve artists, scholars, and the wider community, reinforcing the gallery’s commitment to curiosity, creative investigation, and the free exploration of ideas.
